Every 5 Seconds an Elderly Person is Abused in the U.S.

A new report shows that every five seconds an elderly person is abused in the United States.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council, elder abuse is increasing to record highs, prompting public and official concern. The NCPC goes on to state that for every single case that is reported, there are five that do not get reported. New Jersey ranks among the top states that show the highest levels of elder abuse in relation to the aging population. In 2010 alone, the state reported 176,000 cases of elder abuse, representing 11 percent of the elder population.

Conducting their own research, the National Center for Elder Abuse believes that between one and two million people over the age of 65 are experiencing abuse. This can happen in the form of mistreatment, exploitation or intentional injury. Family members and friends of elders are encouraged to report any signs of elder abuse to the appropriate authorities.

If someone you love has become the victim of elder abuse, take action by contacting our firm and start working with an elder abuse attorney!
