Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests Protesting in Chicago

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Since the church announced its intention of revising the 2002 Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests have been protesting in Chicago.

The Charter was originally created when cases of clergy abuse were becoming more prevalent, or at least the reporting of them was. The increased reporting of clergy abuse began in Boston, and then led to a flood of cases being announced across America, and finally around the world. Since then, the church has reportedly paid out $2 billion to victims, which has led to many dioceses filing for bankruptcy.

In Seattle this week, 200 bishops will meet to discuss revisions to the charter. These could include listing child pornography as a crime against church law, and broadening the definition of child abuse to include those with mental disabilities. When a draft was posted on a website, a letter from a bishop in Springfield, Illinois was also posted, raising concerns from the victims advocate group.
