The Vatican finds itself in court this year as one mother hopes to make it pay for its role in clergy abuse.
This lawsuit follows the landmark case in Oregon where the Vatican was asked to not only produce documents, but to answer questions under oath, about a long-documented history of clergy abuse towards children. Both the Oregon case and the most recent lawsuit is being pursued by attorney Jeffrey Anderson.
The mother who is hoping to sue the Vatican has already had one legal success in the case of defending her son. She sued the Archdiocese in Chicago back in 2008 and won, amassing an amount of $1.6 million. This came after a certain priest, Father McCormack, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting five boys. However, the priest was allowed to continue working at the church, even after he was found guilty in 2005.
A lawyer representing the Vatican commenting recently that, "This case is without any merit," referring to the mother's lawsuit against the church.
