A jury in Berkshire Superior Court took under two hours to find Gary Mercure guilty of sexual abuse. The former Catholic priest was convicted on three counts of forcible child rape and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child younger than 14.
The 62-year-old was charged with these crimes stemming back from 1986 to 1989 where he was found guilty of raping altar boys from the church in Queensbury where he preached. These incidents occurred on day trips that he took with the boys to the Berkshires.
Mercure could now be given a life sentence for the four guilty verdicts that were read to him by Superior Court Clerk Deborah S. Capeless last week. He was later placed into handcuffs and taken away by Court Officer Paul Duma. He is currently being held without bail at the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction until his sentencing next week.
Few comments were made by Mercure's attorney, Michael O. Jennings, as he left the courthouse.
