In the state of Maryland, it is reported by the Associated Press that a Roman Catholic priest has been sentenced to 18 months of at home detention. The priest's sentence was related to allegations that he sexually abused an altar boy back in 1976.
After entering a plea, 74 year old Thomas Bevan was convicted last week Friday. He was charged with one count of child abuse in Alford. When people enter pleas in Alford, they do not admit their guilt, but the state has enough evidence to obtain convictions.
As part of his deal with prosecutors, the state agreed to drop a second child abuse count and agreed not to prosecute the priest for cases that involved three other children from the parish in Baltimore County where Bevan worked.
In August, the Archdiocese of Baltimore removed Bevan as a pastor from the Church of St. Patrick, which is located in Cumberland.
