Vatican Discloses Priest Sex Abuse Statistics

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
After facing enormous and ongoing pressure, the body that represents the Roman Catholic bishops finally released priest sex abuse statistics.  The body reported that at least 100 cases of child sex abuse involving clergy have been reports to church authorities in Italy.

The Italian Bishops' Conference says that there have been approximately 100 cases over the past 10 years.  These are the reported cases that have warranted church trials or other types of disciplinary action by the church.

The group refused to tell the media how many of the cases were reported to law enforcement agencies.  They also refused to say how many priests were defrocked after committing clergy abuse.

This week, in north Italy, a priest went through a trial for allegedly using sexual violence against a 12 year old girl.  Additionally, a 73 year old priest who publicly supported gay rights was accused of sexually abusing a 13 year old boy.  This demonstrates that sexual abuse is a serious problem not only in the United States, but also abroad.
