47 Year Old Man Files Clergy Abuse Lawsuit against Two Bishops

In Greenfield, Michigan, it is reported that a 47 year old man by the name of Peter J. Caffrey has filed a lawsuit against two bishops located in Springfield.  In his lawsuit, Caffrey asserts that he was molested and also raped by a priest named Richard Lavigne.

The complaint was filed at the Franklin County Courthouse and claims that two bishops, Joseph F. Maguire and Thomas L. Dupre, were negligent because they allowed him to be molested by Lavigne.  Caffrey says the sexual abuse started in 1976 and ended in 1977 when he was 13 years old.

According to Caffrey, Lavigne first molested him in a confessional at St. Francis of Assisi Church and then raped him in his chalet over a two year period.  After the molestation, Caffrey moved away and is now married with two children.  He works as an engineer with the federal government.

Caffrey said that for a long time, he repressed memories of the incident.   However, last summer during an argument with his wife, the memories of his sexual abuse came back to him and he decided to take legal action against the priest and bishops.
