You'd think that after being accused of sexually assaulting a minor, Catholic priests would no longer be able to work. Apparently that's not the case in India.
When the Reverend Joseph Jeyapaul was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Minnesota, he left the U.S. and fled to India. That was four years ago, and Jeyapaul continues to work as a Catholic priest in India.
The attorney representing the victim expressed his concerns that no warnings have been given to anyone outside of Jeyapaul's diocese about the scandal. The attorney also claims that Catholic officials, as high up as the Vatican, through the college of Cardinals, to the bishops throughout world, either aren't taking the necessary action to try and reduce the rate of sexual abuse in the church or are simply in denial that it is occurring.
Jeyapaul denies raping the girl and said he has no plans to return to the U.S. to face criminal charges.
