A U.S. attorney wants Pope Benedict XVI questioned about the child sex scandal plaguing the Roman Catholic Church.
Attorney William McMurry, who thinks the pope intentionally tried to cover up child sexual abuse cases in the United States, filed a motion in a Kentucky court to get Pope Benedict to testify under oath about what he knows about the various sex scandals in the church. The motion states that during the time the pope led the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) as Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, he was aware that clergy sexual abuse was occurring in the United States, but discouraged prosecuting any of the accused clergy in order to protect the reputation of the Church.
As written in McMurry's motion, this information links Ratzinger to child sexual abuse by clergy members in the United States, and "directly implicates Pope Benedict XVI's involvement in the Holy See's decision to cast a shroud of secrecy over clergy sexual abuse cases in the United States."
McMurry filed his motion after the New York Times reported that while Ratzinger was head of the CDF, he was told of a case about a pedophile priest accused of molesting 200 boys at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin. Since that story broke, several other victims have stepped forward claiming that when Ratzinger was head of the CDF no action was taken to stop abuse even after it was reported.
