KCBS in San Francisco reported that members of the Survivor's Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) believe the statute of limitations for victims of clergy sexual abuse in California are unfair, and want them to be extended or dropped altogether.
Under the current the law, victims of clergy sexual abuse must take legal action by the age of 26, or within three years of realizing they were a victim of abuse. If a victims fails to file a claim within the statute of limitations, they will lose their right to take legal action altogether.
One victim, Melanie Sakoda, argued that the laws are better at protecting the abusers than they are at protecting the victims. Sakoda also said she'd like to see a change to the existing laws so they are more like Alaska's laws, which have no statute of limitations for felony sexual abuse of a minor.
