Catholic Documents Sought Regarding Former East Greenwich Priest

| No TrackBacks

The Roman Catholic Church has been asked to release documents related to alleged priest abuse in the 1960's reports The Providence Journal.  A man and woman claim that they were both raped as children by a priest, Reverend Brendan Smyth who served at Our Lady of Mercy in East Greenwich from 1965 - 1968. The priest had been sent to Rhode Island after molesting children in Northern Ireland.  He was later charged with 74 counts in the Republic of Ireland and 17 counts in Northern Ireland.  He died in prison in 1997.  The two individuals claiming to have been raped by Smyth are seeking a release of more information about Irish priests that were accused of sexual abuse.  The Irish Catholic Church has had serious problems, and four bishops recently resigned when it was determined that they sheltered pedophile priests.  The claim is that some of these priests also served in other areas in the U.S.A.  Smyth is known as one of the worst offenders in the history of the Catholic Church and unfortunately spent several years in Rhode Island.
