The Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus is likely to have more than 500 sexual abuse claims from victims of abuse from Jesuits in the order reports the Seattle University Spectator. The deadline for filing the suits is November 30, and the claims are pouring in. The Oregon Province includes the areas of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon. The Catholic order filed bankruptcy in January after being sued on behalf of 43 victims, which later became 63 as the suit progressed. The Oregon Province has already settled over 200 claims since 2001, at a cost of more than $25 million from their own resources and insurance companies.
A large number of the claims come from Alaska Natives, many from as long ago as 40 - 60 years in the past.
