Dozens of patients of Dr. George Reardon, a former doctor at the St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center have filed child abuse lawsuits against the hospital and the Hartford Diocese, reports the Courant. The claims allege that both the Hartford Diocese and the hospital knew that the doctor was abusing children, but did nothing to stop the crimes.
Reardon died in 1998. In 2007, when the doctor's former home was being renovated by the new owners, more than 50,000 slides and 100 reels of child pornography were found. It is estimated that over 500 children were abused by Dr. Reardon, based on the number of children in the photographs that were found. Some of the children were abused over 50 times.
