A civil complaint has been filed against the Diocese of Trenton, reports app.com. The complaint alleges a Spring Lake priest committed sexual abuse more than 35 years ago during his ministry at St. Catharine's Church and St. Margaret's Church, both in St. Catharine Parish.
The alleged abuse took place between 1972 and 1974. In 2002, the diocese received a letter about the same case, alleging abuse by Rev. Charles O'Donoghue. They turned this letter over to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office at the time. The Catholic priest involved, a Rev. O'Donoghue, was a member of an Irish religious order known as the Irish Spritans. A diocese spokesman says he believes the priest died in 1986. He served in St. Catharine's Parish from 1969 to 1975.
