The Naperville Sun Times reports that a former Naperville priest who was convicted as a pedophile may soon be released. The priest, Fred Lenczycki, was imprisoned in 2004 for the sexual abuse of three young boys that occurred when he was serving at a Hinsdale church. He had been imprisoned in a facility where he was receiving therapy for several years.
Lenczycki admitted to sexually abusing at least 30 other young boys while a priest in the Chicago area, California and Missouri. He had served at St. Isaac Joques Catholic Church in Hinsdale from 1980-84 until he was accused of molesting a boy. Later he was named in a lawsuit in which it was claimed that he molested nine alter boys and a settlement was made by the Joliet Diocese of an undisclosed amount. He has been declared a "sexually violent person" by a jury. This is the first time that a priest in the U.S. to have this designation.
Lenczycki has not yet been officially defrocked by the Catholic Church but has been told not to wear vestments or perform any Catholic rites.
