Wilmington Catholic Priest Accused of Clergy Abuse in Suit

| No TrackBacks

WDEL News reports that The Diocese of Wilmington is being sued by an unnamed Delaware woman who claims that when she attended St. Mark's High School, Father Charles Wiggins, a teacher at the time, sexually abused her.  This alleged clergy abuse began in 1986.  It is also claimed in the suit that the Diocese and principal at the time were informed of the alleged abuse and did not report the crimes.

The unnamed woman also claims in her suit that both the Diocese and the then-principal, Ron Russo, told both her and her parents that Father Wiggins would no longer be allowed to work with children.  However, then Father Wiggins continued to work with children for more than a decade.  Six years ago a lay review board looked into the matter and determined that Jane Doe's charges were credible and Father Wiggins was only then removed from ministry.

The Diocese did not comment on the lawsuit but Thursday confirmed to the Associated Press that several priests had substantiated sex abuse charges against them and that Father Wiggins was one of the group.  Victims have only until July 9th to file suit against any alleged abusers under Delaware's Child Victims Act which passed the General Assembly two years ago.

Clergy abuse stories such as this are far too common but never easy to hear.  Children under the care of any teacher or religious leader cannot be allowed to take advantage of their position of religious authority to commit crimes.  Clergy abuse can have long term affects and if you have been a victim, you have every right to fight for damages and compensation.  If you or a loved one has been the victim of such criminal and unethical behavior, it is advised that you contact a clergy abuse attorney from the Zalkin Law Firm.  Their legal team has successfully fought for compensation in such clergy abuse cases, and are known for their compassion, dedication and understanding for their clients.
