Voting Soon on New York Child Victims Act Bill

| No TrackBacks

The Catholic Courier reported that the Child Victims Act proposal is anticipated to come before the state Assembly for vote within the next few days.

The bill was revised on June 4th to include public and private institutions. Additionally, this bill would allow for a one year window in which the statute of limitations would be suspended and abused individuals could file civil lawsuits against anyone who sexually abused them.

According to the article, the Catholic Advocacy Network has stated that despite the bill's changes, "it is no less detrimental to the church and will now also financially devastate public-school districts and other public institutions."

An opposing bill is supported by Assemblyman Vito Lopez.  Lopez' bill does not include the one year window in which to file clergy abuse/priest abuse/sexual abuse cases.
