Ireland's Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Releases Final Report

| No TrackBacks

The Los Angeles Times reported that the finalized report based on a nine-year investigation into Catholic-run institutions has been released.

According to the 2,600 page report, Catholic priests and nuns beat, raped, molested, abused and otherwise tortured thousands of boys and girls in orphanages, schools, hostels and other similar establishments between the 1930s and the 1990s (when the last such Catholic institution was closed).

The report was compiled using testimony from thousands of former students and officials from over 250 Catholic establishments.

Additionally, the report indicated that molestation and rape were "endemic" in boys' insitutions.  In girls' schools and orphanages, beatings were routine, often using objects designed to enhance pain. The five-volume report also states that Catholic church officials would consistently attempt to protect pedophiles and abusers from formal charges and arrests.

As evidenced by the report, sexual abuse by Catholic priests and nuns has been rampant for decades and church officials were aware of the abuse in many cases.  If you or a loved one has been subject to sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape or any other inappropriate sexual activity by a Catholic priest or nun, please contact a clergy abuse attorney at the Zalkin Law Firm today.  You need to be aware of your legal rights.
