An article in the New York Times published on March 26, 2009 states that the Attorney General's office in New Hampshire has released names and files relating to dozens of sex abuse allegations and accusations against members of the Catholic Church clergy. Included in this list are 27 clergymen whose names were not previously released to the public.
Kevin Donovan, spokesperson for the Manchester Diocese, stated that the diocese would continue to disclose the names of priests and other church officials who have been accused of sexual abuse.
According to Anne Barrett Doyle of www.bishopaccountability.com, revealing the names of bishops, priests and other clerics "gives people in the parishes where he served a chance to examine whether harm has been done."
In many childhood sexual abuse cases, it is often difficult or even impossible to come forward to report the abuse. It is possible that in releasing these names, individuals who had previously remained silent could find that they were not the only ones abused by certain priests or other church employees and finally be able to report the sexual assaults or abuse.
