Bishop Blurs Belief and Fact in Fresno Clergy Sex Abuse Trial

| No TrackBacks

Injuryboard.com posted a recent article about a Fresno clergy abuse case that took place in 2006.  In this particular case, jurors found Reverend Eric Swearingen, a Catholic priest, guilty of molesting a child.  However, when in came to whether the Catholic church ignored the sexual abuse, the jury was unable to reach an agreement, resulting in a mistrial.

Despite the fact that the jury agreed that Father Swearingen was guilty of molesting a child, Bishop John T. Steinbock of the Diocese of Fresno allowed Swearingen to remain a priest at the Holy Spirit Church where he does have access to children.

It is very important to protect children, adolescents and teens from sexual predators.  If a jury sees enough evidence to agree that an individual is guilty of a sexual crime against children, it follows that the person should not be allowed access to children again.

Unfortunately, in cases like the above, the Bishop believes that the accused priest was not guilty of any sexual abuse crime despite the opinion of the jury and therefore Swearingen remains able to work with children in his church.
